Westernized Japanes Husban and Wife

Westernized Japanes Husban and Wife

275.00

The kanji script on the cover identifies the man & woman Nagai and Akiko respectively.  The photograph was taken Meiji 30 (1897).  The cover identifies the photographer as Inada Satusedo in the town of Akimachi.

The interesting aspect of this ambrotype is that while the wife is wearing the traditional Japanese kimono, the husband is attired completely in western style clothing.

The ambrotype comes in a handcrafted polonia or kiri wood case (Berg 6-138, VR p. 460). The case is 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. The cover and the kanji script are attributed to the photograph.  The case for the ambrotype is not the original case.
